Job Role Overview
The Radio Station Manager has the responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the station including managing the various departments, scheduling on and off air staff, dealing with promotions and other advertising issues as well as ensuring that the station follows Ofcom regulations and guidelines. The station manager is also the liaison between the station owners and the employees and works to make sure that all employees are following the goals of the owners with regards to the type of station and level of professionalism.

The station manager will be required to hire and train all employees or oversee the training by department managers. The station manager has the final decision making ability in determining the format for the station. The station manager also troubleshoots problems in the operation of the station or contracts with other agencies to provide repair or replacement of faulty, damaged or old equipment as needed.
The Station Manager will have a clear understanding of the purpose and format of their station, and the characteristics of their target audience.
They will help to determine the objectives of their station, and are expected to communicate these objectives effectively to all staff, providing leadership and motivation to ensure they are met.
The Station Manager will ensure the smooth running of their station, leading their management team and co-ordinating the activities of all the disciplines within the station.
The Station Manager is encouraged to attract and retain employees with a talent for Radio, establishing the station's culture, and managing staff welfare and morale. They are responsible for communications with staff and other colleagues elsewhere in their organisation. They are also expected to represent the station externally at a local level, building relationships within the community they serve.
They must ensure their station's compliance with laws, regulations and industry codes governing Radio broadcasting, and to see that complaints are dealt with swiftly.
Required Skills

Knowledge of the Radio market, different station and programme styles, and audience demographics

A thorough knowledge of the law, ethics and industry regulation as they affect Radio production.
Knowledge of when it is necessary, and how to acquire, the relevant clearances and licenses, including copyright and music clearances.
Knowledge of the requirements of the relevant Health and Safety legislation and procedures and a high level of IT skills - particularly good word-processing and data handling skills.
Additional Information
Once in post, the Radio Station Managers will be expected to continue developing their skills on the job and keep their knowledge up-to-date,.
There is the opportunity to find Colleges and private training providers which offer a range of short courses which could be of benefit to Station Managers seeking professional development.
The station manager will work closely with outside groups to fulfill a station's commitment to community service and the public interest.
The Station manager will work closely with a radio station's promotions department to devise and execute station events and remote broadcasts.
They will be required to work closely with colleagues in an effort to maximize the station's profits through sponsorships.
